About Sesame Access

Sesame Access Systems Ltd has been trading since 1996.  The company was set up by Charlie Lyons, a hydraulic engineer who had run a successful engineering company for 35 years.

One day Charlie was in a pub with his friend, and his friend complained how his wife had problems accessing buildings because she was a wheelchair user.  Charlie loves the challenge of inventing, and set about to find a solution to the problem.

When Charlie’s son Steven Lyons finished University, Steven joined with Charlie to build a prototype and bring it to market.  The first Sesame lift was installed in Merchant Taylor’s Hall, Threadneedle Street, London in 1996.  This lift is our oldest lift, still runs perfectly and is used about three times a week for disabled access for functions in the building.

Sesame has installed over 100 lifts in UK and Europe.  Our Clients include but are not restricted to Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Kensington Palace, Tate Britain, Eton College, Institution of Civil Engineers London, UK Supreme Court London.  In 2013 we installed a Sesame lift at Sotheby’s Paris.

The Unique Selling Point of our lifts are that they are ‘invisible’.  Sesame lifts provide high quality wheelchair access, using cutting edge engineering technology, whilst maintaining the architectural aesthetics of the building.  English Heritage have approved Sesame lifts in many buildings in the UK.  Our lifts conform to British Standards, and also Technischer Überwachungs-Verein (TUV) German Standards.

Sesame Access was shortlisted for the British Engineering Excellence Awards two years running.

Today, our product range is hallmarked by a commitment to diversity and includes a choice of retracting stairs, platform lift and front door lifts. Our systems are designed to lift to up to 1.5 metres, however, bespoke wheelchair lifts can be designed for rises above 1.5 metres.

With superiority in design build and installation, the Sesame System is CE marked and meets all the requirements of relevant EU directives. Similarly, all of our working processes including risk assessments, method statements and general practices are accredited with the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (SHSAS) certification. Our project managers additionally hold the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) and are qualified first aiders. We hold an Independent Living Design award and a Millennium Product marquee awarded by the Design Council in testament to the creativity of our products.
