Appeal launched for additional funding to provide specialist wheelchairs to enable disabled access to Roker Beach

The service will also provide specially adapted bikes which will allow people with disabilities to cycle along the promenade.

Leading the appeal is Headway Wearside representative Kim Hunter who said: “While there is a ramp down to the beach people using wheelchairs can’t currently access the sand and the sea. Having access to the beach would make a huge difference to families, many of whom simply don’t come because they can’t get down onto the sand.

This is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s (the UK) 2021 follow-up report to the 2016 Inquiry by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (‘the Committee’). This report covers the years 2020 and 2021 and is responding to the recommendations issued by the Committee in its report on its inquiry concerning the UK, carried out under article 6 of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

The UK government and the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, share a commitment to supporting and improving the lives of disabled people. This report provides an update on policies and services that are delivered nationally by the UK government, and on policies that have been devolved which enable the devolved administrations to reflect the particular needs of their populations.

Slough mum fined for misusing son’s disabled parking badge

A Slough mum who used her son’s disabled parking badge so she could avoid paying for a space while visiting a restaurant with a friend has been fined.

Abida Ahmed was legitimately issued a blue badge for her son and was permitted to use it when she was travelling with him.

But when out for dinner at the Giggling Squid in Windsor on May 14 she was caught parking in a disabled bay before getting out of her car without her son.

The 46-year-old, of Mildenhall Road, was subsequently charged with misusing her son’s disability blue badge.

She failed to appear for her hearing at Reading Magistrates’ Court on December 10 but was convicted in her absence.

Special wheelchairs give disabled access to beach

“I fundraised and donated the beach wheelchair because I am passionate about making a difference and removing barriers for full inclusion,” Lynch said. “My vision is to have the State of Florida beach accessible within the next 10 years. The beach is my happy place and everyone deserves to get salty, disabled for not,” said Lynch.

The new chair cost roughly $2,200.

The new and existing beach wheelchairs can be reserved through the Parks and Recreation Department 48 hours prior to use by calling (561) 845-4070.

Updated: Complaints after disability access parking bays blocked at York station – LNER responds

A councillor in York has asked LNER to remove machinery that is blocking two of the blue badge bays at the station.

Labour’s Katie Lomas complained that they were not available for people with mobility issues.

“They are the nearest to the entrance too. she added in a tweet to @LNER.

“Please leave these bays free to support access for those who need it!”
