National Apprenticeship Week is all about celebrating apprentices, the skills they bring, and the opportunities apprenticeships create - and at Sesame Access, we’re proud to support and invest in the next generation of engineers.
Engineering plays a huge role in what we do. From designing and manufacturing accessible solutions to solving real-world challenges, we rely on curious, creative, and practical minds. That’s why degree apprenticeships are such an important part of our team and our future.
At Sesame Access, we currently have two degree apprentices, Danny Cox and Krystian Kowalczuk, who are both studying BEng (Hons) Electro-Mechanical Engineering (Level 6) at the University of Nottingham.
Meet Danny and Krystian
Danny Cox is currently in Year 4 of his degree apprenticeship, while Krystian Kowalczuk joined us more recently and is in Year 1. Although they’re at different stages of their journey, both are gaining hands-on engineering experience while studying towards a full honours degree.
By combining academic learning with real workplace projects, Danny and Krystian are developing practical skills that can’t be taught in a classroom alone. From problem-solving and technical design to understanding how engineering decisions impact real people, their work directly contributes to the accessible solutions Sesame Access delivers every day.
Why degree apprenticeships matter
For many young people, choosing a career path can feel overwhelming. University, apprenticeships, full-time work - the options can be confusing. Degree apprenticeships offer a powerful alternative that brings together the best of both worlds.
Some of the key benefits include:
Earn while you learn - apprentices gain a salary while studying towards a recognised degree
No tuition fees - the cost of the degree is covered, reducing student debt
Real-world experience - learning is applied immediately in a working environment
Career-ready skills - apprentices graduate with years of industry experience already under their belt
For engineering in particular, this blend of theory and hands-on experience is invaluable. It helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world problem-solving - something that’s essential in a sector focused on innovation and impact.
Inspiring the next generation of engineers
Engineering needs fresh ideas, diverse perspectives, and young talent. Degree apprenticeships open the door for people who might not otherwise see engineering as an option - whether that’s because of financial barriers, learning preferences, or simply not knowing the pathway exists.
At Sesame Access, we believe that investing in people like Danny and Krystian isn’t just good for our business, but it’s also good for the future of engineering. Their journeys show that there’s more than one way to build a successful career, and that practical, hands-on routes can be just as powerful as traditional ones.
Looking ahead
As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we’re proud of the commitment and progress our apprentices continue to make. Danny and Krystian are not only developing their own careers but also helping shape accessible solutions that make a real difference.
If you’re a young person considering engineering, or an organisation thinking about apprenticeships, their stories are proof that degree apprenticeships are a brilliant pathway - practical, rewarding, and full of opportunity.
Happy National Apprenticeship Week from Sesame Access! 🎉
