Sesame Access was proud to nominate Queer Britain for this well-deserved recognition, and we’re delighted to see its commitment to accessibility and inclusion celebrated at such a meaningful event surrounded by an inspiring group of people.
Queer Britain, located at 2 Granary Square in London, formerly known as Regeneration House, is the UK’s first national LGBTQ+ museum. This remarkable cultural landmark is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history, stories, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. Set within a Grade II Listed Building, Queer Britain stands as a powerful example of how historic spaces can be made accessible to all, reinforcing the belief that everyone, regardless of identity or ability, deserves equal access to education and culture.
We are especially proud to have played a part in this achievement. Our Sesame Access lift, which is beautifully integrated into the historic architecture of Granary Square, provides seamless wheelchair access while preserving the building’s listed features. This lift allows all visitors to enter the museum with dignity, independence, and ease.
Beyond the lift, Queer Britain exemplifies what an inclusive venue should be. With step-free entry, wide doorways, spacious galleries, accessible restrooms, and seating options for visitors with mobility challenges, the museum ensures a welcoming environment for everyone. It also goes further by offering audio guides for visually impaired visitors and sensory-friendly spaces to support neurodiverse guests.
This award is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and inclusive values. Queer Britain has created not just a museum, but a safe, accessible space where all individuals, regardless of gender, sexuality, or ability, can connect, reflect, and celebrate LGBTQ+ history and culture.
